Course Outline / Overview

Key Stage 3

Throughout KS3 students will be encouraged to develop their knowledge and understanding of a variety of Geographical themes. Place knowledge will be constantly reinforced by taking examples from a variety of countries and regions across the World. Social, Economic and Environmental impacts of Geographical issues will be considered at a variety of scales.

Examples of themes covered include:

  • What is Geography?
  • World Development.
  • Rivers and Coasts
  • Population and Migration
  • Volcanoes and Earthquakes
  • Tourism

Key Stage 4

GCSE specification – AQA A


Students will continue to explore Geographical issues and develop deeper understanding of Geographical concepts. Enquiring into and investigating Geographical issues and their impacts form a central theme to much of the work covered. This course is examined via two examinations and a Controlled Assessment based on Primary data collected through fieldwork.

Themes covered are taken from optional units, such as:

  • The Restless Earth
  • Water on the Land
  • The Coastal Zone
  • Population Change
  • Changing Urban Environments
  • Tourism


Key Stage 5

A-Level specification – AQA


AS Geography covers units on

  • Rivers, Floods and Management
  • Coastal Environments
  • Population Change
  • Energy Issues

A2 Geography involves option units from:

  • Plate Tectonics and Associated Hazards
  • World Cities
  • Development and Globalisation
  • Weather and Associated Hazards

Fieldwork is an essential component of both courses and often involves a residential visit.
