Course outline / overview:

Key Stage 3

• At KS3 we work to develop and adapt active reading skills and strategies; reading and engaging with a wide and varied range of texts. Relating texts to the social, historical and cultural contexts in which they were written and analysing how writers’ use of linguistic and literary features shapes and influences meaning. We also promote understanding and response to ideas, viewpoint, themes and purposes in texts and analyse writers’ use of organisation, structure, layout and presentation
• We develop and adapt discussion skills and strategies in formal and informal contexts; using different dramatic approaches to explore ideas, texts and issues. Developing active listening skills and strategies, listening and responding to what speakers say in formal and informal contexts.
• We explore language variation and development according to time, place, culture, society and technology. We develop expression of viewpoint, voice and ideas; using and adapting the conventions and forms of texts on paper and on screen.

Key Stage 4

GCSE specification: Edexcel English

The course is organised into three units:

• Unit 1: (Common with English Language) Developing reading skills to analyse contemporary non-fiction texts and to develop writing skills in order to express ideas and information clearly and accurately
• Unit 2: Study of a Different Cultures prose text, a Shakespeare text and writing to analyse.
• Unit 3: Developing skills in Speaking and Listening, a study of a collection of poetry and developing skills in writing creatively

• Unit 1: Common with English
• Unit 2: Study of a Different Cultures prose text and writing to analyse.
• Unit 3: Developing skills in Speaking and Listening, developing skills in analysing spoken language and developing skills in writing for the spoken voice

• Unit 1: Studying one text from Literary Heritage and one text from Different Cultures.
• Unit 2: Study of a collection of poetry and developing skills in analysing style, language, structure and form
• Unit 3: Developing skills in responding and analysing the writers’ craft in response to Shakespeare and Contemporary Drama

• Unit F661: A study of Poetry and Prose 1800 – 1945
• Unit F662: A study of three post 1900 texts (coursework)
• Unit F663: A study of Poetry and Drama pre 1800
• Unit F664: A study of three texts across a minimum of two genres (coursework)
